All Original Sailormoon R Bandai Japan items were produced in 1993

Remember, these toys are for display only, and are not for sale

Excellent 19" (48cm) Series by Bandai Japan

I thought I'd start with these because I wanted the graphic at the top of the page. :) A beautiful set. The girls are tall, they're proud, and they're well detailed. Retailing for ¥9800, these limited editions were more for collectors than kids. Each figure comes with a wand, a display stand, and a couple of cards. All five of the Inner Senshi were included in this set.

Sailor Moon R Dolls

1993 saw the first big push for Sailor Moon toy merchandise in Japan. Bandai released the first full series of 11" Sailor Moon dolls, consisting of the five principle Sailor Scouts, (Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Moon & Venus) all in their fighting outfits. The dolls were a huge success, which encouraged Bandai to release a seperate series of dolls featuring the girls (Makoto, Ami, Minako & even Chibiusa) in their school uniforms. Instead of a school uniform, Rei wears her Temple Robes. The alternate doll of Usagi was actually a Neo Queen Serenity doll. (Yes, Sailor Moon's mother!) Bandai did not produce a doll of Usagi in a school uniform. The R series dolls have not been produced since 1993 and are very rare, particularly the school clothes dolls. I still need the Neo Queen and the Venus in school uniform dolls to complete the set. Both the fighting outfit dolls and the school uniform dolls sold for ¥2980 each, with the exception of Chibiusa who cost ¥2800.

Doll Clothes and Accessories

In addition to the dolls, there was the Sailor Moon R Sailor Team Sailormoon Dress series, which was composed of the school uniforms and other outfits seen in the show, plus a few fancy dresses. Just as in the series of school uniformed dolls listed above, Rei's school uniform was replaced with her temple robe.  These quality outfits were sold seperately in nice display boxes. All of them are rare finds, and I can only hope to add more to my collection. Here, courtesy of Janet, is a look at 3 R series outfits: Ami's school uniform with bookbag, Moon's Princess Serenity gown, and a formal pink dress. All of these outfits come complete with everything you'd need, from gloves to shoes. The school uniforms all came with bookbags, too. All came with a trading card. I don't have all of these, and therefore, I can't provide pictures of every one, but I'll provide short descriptions when I can.

"Special Edition R" Series by Bandai Asia

This relatively common series of imported Sailor Moon dolls is believed to be a re-release of the original Japanese R line. This series shipped to countries in Europe, as well as Hong Kong, where they eventually found their way into many Chinatown stores throughout North America. The dolls distributed in Hong Kong have a sticker on the front window panel that identifies them as "Special Edition R" in English. Exactly why they're called "Special Edition" is beyond me. The dolls shipped to European countries are the same but they don't have this sticker. The multilingual text on the rest of the packaging is in French, English, German, Spanish and, I believe, Dutch. This series was produced as needed over a couple of years, which is why they aren't as scarce and are generally reasonably priced.

The most immediately noticeable difference between the North American and the Euro-dolls are the rounder, fuller faces. The noses are more appropriately present, too. The rounder face looks good on Usagi/Serena, but doesn't fit all of the others as well. Still, it's hard not to prefer the baby-faced European dolls to their noseless American counterparts. Accessories include a wand, gloves, a choker and a display stand. Each doll also comes with a trading card. Click on the names below to see scans of these 11.5 inch dolls.

Sailor Moon R - Special Edition Series

Petit Soldier 5" (13cm) Figure Series by Bandai Asia

Nice, small figures of the five main scouts. The arms are poseable at the shoulders but they're basically just figurines. Each comes with its own display base, which features a trading card sealed into a plastic base. (Hentai Note: One thing I always found strange about these figures is that the skirts on this set are so short. On some figures, their, uh, undergarments are slightly visible, even if you're looking at them straight on. Just who's buying these toys, anyway? ^_^ ) Another series of Petite Soldiers was made for the S season.

Beauty Selection Series by Bandai Japan

These are the snap together plastic models that served as my introduction to the world of Sailor Moon. Each model comes unassembled with a set of stickers to add a little more color to the costume as well as the little details like the chokers and headbands. A display stand is included, and with these figures, you'll need them. The arms and legs do not bend, but do have limited poseability. The finished models stand 5.5 inches (14cm) tall.

Castle Playsets by Bandai Japan

There are five different playsets in this series and each has one room with about 30 accessories and one superdeformed 6cm Sailor Scout. Moon's playset is a bedroom, Jupiter's is a kitchen, Mercury's is a library, Mars' is a karaoke room and Venus comes with an infirmary. By the way, the actual figures themselves look very good, and they even come with wands. They are different from the 2 inch Sailor Cute series, which is listed below. You know, I've always wondered - If these playsets feature the characters in the room that fits their special talent, then why is Moon in...

Sailor Cute Series by Bandai Japan / Bandai Asia / Irwin Toys

This series of 2 inch (6 cm) superdeformed figures was distributed in various countries and came in at least three different kinds of packaging. Those from Bandai Hong Kong and Bandai Japan came in little boxes. Those from Europe and Canada were on blister cards. The European cards had the same pink and blue colors as the European dolls, the Canadian cards were dark blue, like the rest of the North American toys. Available characters: Sailor Scouts Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Mars; Tuxedo Mask, Luna, Artemis, Prince Endymion, Princess Serenity, Usagi (in school outfit w/bookbag) and Naru (aka Molly!) Chibi-usa, along with her Luna-P (the Luna Ball) was also added for the Asian market. I personally like this series just because of the range of characters. How many toys have you seen of Naru, Usagi's best friend from school? And Luna and Artemis make great accessories for any of the doll series'.

In Japan, these figures were sold at ¥780, with the exception of the cats, which were ¥580 each, and a two pack of the Prince & Princess, which cost ¥1500.

Pic 1 features Usagi, Naru & Sailor Mercury in the Hong Kong/Japanese packaging.

Pic 2 is a montage of some of the others from the bubble cards.

Role Playing Toys

There has been speculation that a set of wands exists for the rest of the scouts as well. If I ever find one, or even a picture of one, I'll be sure to post it here.
