Intro:
SuperS, the fourth season of Sailor Moon, brought the biggest flood of merchandise to the shores of Japan. A license holder's dream and a collector's nightmare. Looking at all of the toys released under the Super S banner, you might notice that many of them have a yellow "IRS" logo on a corner of the box. This indicates that the toy is part of the ingeneous "Sailor Link" series. The battery powered SuperS role-playing wands have the ability to activate certain SuperS toys just like a remote control. They can make the talking dolls and plush Pegasus speak, make the brooches and orbs light up and play music, and even make the pizza delivery scooter start and stop! The only downside to this feature is that it ends with the SuperS series. None of the SailorStars toys were part of the Sailor Link series. Well, it was great while it lasted!
Just when you think that the merchandising machine has finally come to a halt, we get a 1997 edition Super Sailor Moon! She looks like the European release Moon, but with an all new Super costume, which looks great. A new Super Chibi-moon was released, too.

From left to right: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Super Sailor Moon, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus.
New, less generic head molds were sculpted for the Super S series, marking a considerable improvement over earlier sets. And as you may have noticed in the group illustration, Sailor Moon is now Super Sailor Moon, with an all new costume and a higher price, too. A new version of Tuxedo Mask was issued, again with an all new and improved head sculpt. The Inner Scouts retailed in Japan for ¥2980, Super Sailor Moon cost ¥3980.
- Sailor Mars
- Sailor Mercury
- Sailor Venus
- Sailor Saturn - [¥3200] - Due to her younger age, she stands about 9" tall, the same as Chibi-Moon or the Amazoness Quartet. Her staff is included. ( **Possibly the first Saturn doll. I've heard rumours of an S Saturn but have yet to ever see even a picture of one.** )
- Tuxedo Mask [¥3300]
The Amazoness Quartet (aka The Asteroid Senshi) were a cute group of villains that caught the eyes of the fans, or at least those at Bandai, who decided to produce their first series of Sailor Moon villains. (About time, too.) Do I need to say that these girls are difficult to find? The quartet gals all look pretty young and these dolls stand about 9" tall, like Chibi-moon or Sailor Saturn. Each has her own unique outfit, hair color and hair style. All are very cool. [¥2800]
- CereCere - Pink hair
- PallaPalla - Blue hair
- VesVes - Red hair
- JunJun - Green hair

Interesting circumstances regarding the Super S talkers. First, there was a "Star
Power" set, which included Super Sailor Moon, Super
Chibi-Moon and the rest of the Inner Senshi in their standard costumes. The boxes
have a picture of a wand pointing to the doll, illustrating the IRS "Sailor
Link" feature on the front below the window. Each doll says three phrases. The first
is the transformation cry, "Star Power, Make Up!" The second
phrase is an attack, the third is a general quote that matches the personality of the
character. The Inner Senshi was priced at ¥3800, talking Chibi was ¥3600.
Super S Chara Talk Series 1 - Star Power
Months later, an additional set of four talking dolls was released, utilizing the Inner Senshi's new attacks and powers from the show. These are the "Crystal Power" dolls. Moon, who's enhanced powers were reflected in the first set, was not included. The new Super S talkers have shiny metallic lame costumes, and are easily distinguishable from the first set. The boxes for this set have a picture of a Japanese girl with long pony tails holding a Moon wand. The second set is also part of the IRS Sailor Link series and again, there are three phrases. The first is now, "Crystal Power, Make Up!", then an attack cry and a new personality matching quote. These were priced at ¥3980.
A very rare pair of dolls, these are standard size, poseable dolls that have a very special feature which allows you to "transform" them from Chibiusa and Usagi into Super Chibi-Moon and Super Sailor Moon in seconds! Their costume's skirts, collars and bows have velcro fasteners and can be removed and replaced with a party dresses or skirts, with additional bows and flowers to accessorize even more! These also come with gloves & boots, the approbriate wands, a headband with those little winglike barets, a pairs of shoes, a trading card and a doll stand. All in all, I think these are really cool packages. The gimmick must have been successful because the following year, the entire Beauty Change Series used the same feature, although they aren't nearly as nice as these. The Henshin dolls even had their own special line of boxed outfits.
Twinkle Pegasus - Super Chibi-Moon's winged unicorn has a long blue mane and tail, clear blue plastic wings and he comes with a brush and a comb. I'm looking at it as I write this and I'm asking myself, a 29 year old non-effeminate male, why the hell did I buy this? Have I finally gone too far? (Don't mind me. I only get to work on these pages late at night...) [¥3480]
Playsets - A plethora of playsets were made, allowing little girls to take their dolls out to the boutique, to the cake & sushi shop (?!), or to just hang around Usagi's bedroom watching TV while doing the laundry. The following is a list of the playsets I know were available, plus a few scans from the backs of other boxes.
Doll Clothes - Another nice selection of outfits were available this year. There were boxed outfits of the new "Super" costumes for the Inner Senshi, plus a regular series of packaged outfits were made, for either Usagi or Chibi-usa. Here are outfits #4, #7, #8, #9 & #10. To see the boxed Senshi uniforms, here are those for Jupiter, Mars, Mercury & Venus.
These are cute little plastic figures that come with two sets of snap-on clothes. One set is the hero costume, the other set is party clothes. Seven are available, including the Inner Senshi, Super Sailor Moon, Super Chibi-moon and Tuxedo Kamen. These were originally produced in Japan in 1995, then released by Bandai Asia in 1997.
Sailor Mercury Pachi-Pachi (Bandai Japan)
Pachi-Pachi Trio 1 - Moon, Tuxedo Mask, Chibi-moon (Bandai Asia)
Pachi-Pachi Trio 2 - Venus, Mars, Jupiter (Bandai Asia)
Super S Plush Talking Pegasus - Also known as "Tokimeki Pegasus." The title kind of says it all. Well, almost. It also flaps it's wings as it talks! It measures about inches (cm) tall, inches (cm) long and takes four AA batteries. The jewel on the forehead serves as a sensor for the remote control wands that also work on the talking dolls. Translated from Japanese, Pegasus says, "Catch your dreams, Chibi-moon" twice. Wanna hear it? (.wav format) Retailed for ¥4980 Yen.
This Plush Bell unfolds into a plush Pegasus toy. [¥1980]
Luna, Diana & Artemis - Each sold seperately. Luna and Artemis were priced at 1000 Yen, Diana at 980 Yen.
Super Chibi-moon - There were three plush versions of both Super Sailor Moon & Super Chibi-moon available in different sizes. They all looked similar if you ask me. This picture shows the two larger Chibi toys. The smaller one in the pic is about 22 inches high, which would make the larger one close to 40 inches!
These cute one-piece costumes took the role-playing idea one step further, allowing little girls the opportunity to dress up like their heroes. From this collector's point of view, these are the ultimate role-playing items.
I love these things. These are 2" high molded figures that come in plastic capsules and are found in vending machines in Japanese toy stores. Each has a metal loop at the top of the head and a small chain. You can use them as keychains or attach them to bookbags, clothes, whatever. You can also replace the small chain with a larger one and wear it as a necklace. The sculpting and paint jobs on these small figures are very nice considering their size, and the paint doesn't rub off if you touch it! All of the scans below are blown up, to give you a better look at the quality.
SuperS Series 1 (1995) : Sailor Scouts during their down time: Venus w/ volleyball, Mars cleans up, Mercury in her school uniform and Jupiter the cook. In addition, you've got your costumed Super Sailor Moon and Chibi-Moon, who comes with a miniature Luna!

SuperS Series 2 (1995) : Sorry, no banner illustration here. The foldout featured illustrations, not pictures. Check out the scan, though. They're great! Sailor Scouts Venus, Jupiter, Chibi-Moon, Moon, Mars and Mercury.
SuperS Series 3 (1996) : Chibi-usa in a white dress comes with her winged horse Pegasus, then we've got another whimsical Super Sailor Moon, a Super Chibi-moon and Helios, who is Pegasus in human form. (The blue hair and the horn sticking out of his head kind of give it away...)

Necklace Pouches - Huh? These are what? I don't know, either. These are small felt pouches with the Scouts' faces on them and a thick string so that girls can wear them as necklaces, according to the foldout. Kinda weird but cute, nonetheless. The Inner Senshi plus Chibi-moon were available.
