Robocon

Updated 9/12/2001

Introduction:

Robocon was a live-action children's series which aired in 1974, about a clumsy but well-meaning red robot who stands about 5 feet tall. Robocon is taken in by a family in which the children all adore him but the parents quickly realize that Robocon is more trouble than he's worth. A new Robocon series premiered in January of 1999, which brought on a resurgence of Robocon merchandise, based on both the old and the new series. The new Robocon is easily identifiable, since he now has car headlights on his body.

The Robocon catcher toy items were quite diverse, and he seemed to pop up fairly often in 1998 and 1999. One of the more unusual items, which is not shown here, was a pair of figures which could be used to make shaved ice. (Like Sno-Cones.)

There were also a few series of capsule toys made by Bandai. I have 4 of those sets, and will add them soon. All of the toys currently listed here were produced by Banpresto.

75370.jpg (77508 bytes) Feb., 1998 Plush Set. Complete set of 3 shown, including Robocon sitting, Robin-chan and Robocon standing. The sitting characters are about 7 inches tall, the standing Robocon is about 9 inches. This is one of my favorite catcher toy sets. The quality is excellent.
75429.jpg (77647 bytes) Aug., 1998 Robocon popped up in two different Toei Heroes Keychain sets in 1998, alongside other Toei heroes like the Go Rangers & Kamen Rider, before his own set of 7 keychains was released in August of that year. This image shows the complete Robocon set, which includes Robo-Gantsu and Robin-chan! The Robocon shown in the bottom right corner is made of a translucent PVC.
robo-af.jpg (61742 bytes) 1998  In September, a collection of 5 Toei Heroes Action Figures was released, which included a Robocon figure with changeable legs and wheels.
75482a.jpg (23286 bytes) 1998 This 5 inch vinyl Robocon bank was part of a set of five Toei Heroes which also included Robot Keiji K & Kikaider 01.
445.jpg (24490 bytes) 1999 The year kicked off with a new set of 6 Robocon lightup keychains. There were just two molds used. One of Robocon standing with his arms up, and one of him on wheels with his arms at his "waist." There were variations of eye styles and some were made with translucent red plastic. When you shake the figure or press a button under his feet, the figure lights up and flashes.

Battery Operated Robocon Set - 1999 - These fantastic little figures are just over 4 inches tall. They roll across the floor, turn, spin and roll some more! Each figure comes with 3 interchangeable dials that control the riding pattern. You just lift the hood to change the dial. A great little toy! There were four in the series, two of which were made with a transluscent plastic.

Plush DX Series - 5 new "plush" figures, but this time they're part of the "Deluxe" line of oversized toys! All five styles are essentially the same, with different eye variations. The second plush, seen in the first picture here, has the half closed "confused" eyes and is scratching his head. Including the little radar on top of the head, these measure about 13 inches tall.
75709.jpg (62445 bytes) 2000 Plush Key Chain Mascot Set - The set has 5 pieces, including Robocon in standing, sitting and flying modes, plus Gantsu-Sensei and Robin-chan. These are about 4 inches tall.
