Urusei Yatsura
aka "Lum"
Updated 01/26/2002
Introduction:
Urusei Yatsura was the first big hit for Rumiko Takahashi, who later went on to create Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, and most recently, Inu Yasha. Like the rest, this one started out as a weekly comic and was later developed into a long running anime series. UY deserves all of the accolades it receives. Not only was it a huge hit in Japan, it is one of the most recognized anime titles in America, and the quality of this series has had a lot to do with the rise in popularity of manga and anime in America during the late 1980's and early 90's.
The story is rich with odd and interesting characters, but there are two central characters - Ataru Moroboshi, the girl-crazy teenage boy, and Lum, the cute alien girl with little horns and a tiger striped bikini. There was just one UY plush set, which was produced in 1992. Included in the set are Ten (Lum's cousin), Kotatsu-Neko (a ghost cat), and Cherry, a Buddhist monk. A couple of years later, a plush set based on characters by Rumiko Takahashi included a new rendition of Lum, which will be added soon. The following toys were made by Banpresto.
